Volkswagen at the 2019 Ploughing Championships

Volkswagen will have a strong focus on is SUV range at this year’s National Ploughing Championships, writes Trish Whelan.

The brand has been a strong supporter of the show for many years and this year will have their largest range of SUVs on display ever, including the new T-Cross, the T-Roc, the Tiguan and 7-seat Tiguan Allspace, as well as the top of the range Touareg.

The National Ploughing Championships attracts almost a quarter of a million visitors each year and this year, with such a focus on new technology including electric vehicles, visitors will see the fully-electric e-Golf. Making its Irish debut is the new VW Passat, available as a petrol, diesel and as a plug-in hybrid in the form of the new Passat GTE.

If the weather takes a turn for the worst, visitors to the Volkswagen stand can pop by and pick up a Volkswagen poncho.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will also have a strong presence at this year’s show. Models on display will include the new Grand California and the brand is also promising more surprises to be revealed closer to the event.

Mercedes-Benz is starting a pilot automated car ride-hailing project in San Jose, California, to progress the development of self-driving cars, writes Brian Byrne . The vehicles will be S-Class cars equipped with Bosch and M-B systems that help with self-driving. Selected people in the city will get an app which allows them to engage the service, which will shuttle between the west side of the city and its downtown area on two key streets. Though the cars will drive themselves, there will be a 'safety driver' aboard to monitor things and take over if there's an emergency situation. The city of San Jose in 2017 became the first metro area to invite private companies to carry out field tests of automated driving.

Opel’s Vivaro goes electric

Opel continues its electrification offensive with the Vivaro van to also be offered in a pure battery electric version as of 2020, writes Trish Whelan . The Vivaro-e extends Opel’s range of particularly efficient light commercial vehicles. Customers can then choose between two sizes of battery, depending on their needs: a 50kWh battery for a range of up to 200kms or a 75kWh battery for up to 300km (according to WLTP). With emission-free deliveries becoming increasingly important in urban areas, the demand for purely electric light commercial vehicles will increase accordingly.   The Vivaro-e is based on the group’s variable MP2 platform which enables the use of conventional as well as electrified powertrains. The Opel Vivaro No. 3 is available in three lengths instead of two (4.60 metres, 4.95m and 5.30m); has a 200kg higher payload of up to 1,400kgs and can pull half a ton more (trailer load up to 2,500kg). Super-luxury GLS from Mercedes-Maybach

Not for the many, Daimler has just revealed a super-luxury version of the GLS top end SUV, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, writes Brian Byrne . Features include an exclusive to Maybach 558hp V8 engine, reclining rear seats, and extra noise insulation, as well as running boards which automatically deploy when a door is opened. The car is due to arrive on the market in the second half of next year. No prices as yet.
